The adventures of teen exorcist Allen Walker, as he fights the Akuma weapons of the deadly Millenium Earl.

Allen is a member of the Black Cross Organization, who aid him in fighting the terrible monsters.

D. Gray-Man is excellently drawn, and has an interesting plot, revolving around "Innocence", a substance of which there is exactly 109 pieces, scattered all over the world. An exorcist is a person who has found and sychornized himself with this Innocence. They are also referred to as "Soldiers of Life". The duty of the BCO is to collect all the innocence before the Earl, to ensure the exorcists can stop him.

The Earl, meanwhile, is "writing the script of mankind's demise", according to Allen. The Earl is planning to use a "flood" of Akumas to "cleanse" the Earth of sin, using the sorrow of its inhabitants to create Akuma.

An Akuma, in essence is made up of an enchanted robotic body, the soul of someone who died, and the grief of someone who cared for them in life. By tricking the grief-stricken person into agreeing, the Earl gives them back their loved ones... at the cost of that person's body. The Akuma receives the soul of the dead, takes the skin of their loved one, and masquerades as them, mixing into society until the weapon inside them activates and they become a true weapon. As the weapon kills and reverts, it grows ever more powerful, "evolving".
