Final Fantasy VII (Computer Game - Playstation 1)

Two thousand years ago, a being known as Jenova fell to earth on the planet of Gaia.

The ShinRa Electric Power Company began using the remains of Jenova to experiment on its military troops, resulting in the creation of the creature known as Sephiroth. When Sephiroth discovered the true nature of his existence, he vowed to destroy the ShinRa and all other life on Gaia. During this time, Rufus ShinRa inherited and became the President of ShinRa Company after the death of his father.

Sephiroth was eventually defeated by Cloud Strife and his allies - Aeris Gainsborough, Barret Wallace, Cait Sith, Cid Highwind, Red XIII, Tifa, Vincent Valentine and Yuffie.

Final Fantasy: Advent Children (Film)

The film is set two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII.

Before Sephiroth's defeat at the hands of Cloud and his companions, Sephiroth was able to somehow ensure his survival in the form of three brothers, Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo. Kadaj embodies Sephiroth's cruel and vengeful side (and, presumably, his Oedipus complex), Loz his physical strength and child-like confusion (and his ability to be an idiot), and Yazoo his cold detachment and otherwordly beauty (tell me that the Velvet Nightmare isn't a penis extension, PLZ.). The three Silver Haired Men (SHM) searched for the remains of Jenova, which they believed were being hidden by Rufus ShinRa.

At the same time, many people were falling victim to a disease known as Geostigma. Sephiroth's plan was to corrupt the Lifestream by using the tainted energy of dead Geostigma victims to sicken the energy of the planet.

Sephiroth was able to re-materialise through the body of Kadaj after absorbing Jenova cells. Again, it fell to Cloud and his friends to defeat Sephiroth, restore balance to the planet and purify the Lifestream.
