The Geostigma first appeared over a year ago when Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo attempted to bring back Sephiroth; Geostigma occur when Jenova cells are present in the body, and dark, bruise-like markings appear where the body's natural defences attempt to kill them off. The initial epidemic of Geostigma was halted by Cloud's defeat of Sephiroth and Aeris' intervention.

On the DDD community, the Geostigma reappeared when Sephiroth allied with Yunalesca, spreading the disease across the community with her help in manipulating the Farplane. Many members were infected, including Rufus ShinRa, who succumbed to the disease and died shortly afterwards.

The outbreak was cured with the help of Aeris and Zack who, with the aid of Colette, delivered holy water from Gaia to every world affected.
