History
Jordan carries on his shoulders the burden of greatness. His grandfather, William Jordan Wilde, was one of the first explorers sent to colonize new worlds in the name of the Earth Coalition. In 2053, William's team of explorers ventured further into the unknown, far beyond the borders of the Earth Coalition's sphere of influence. They landed on a dark and desolate world, not knowing it was the home planet of the Crogs, Kramm. William and his crew of fifteen men were captured by the Crog scouting party and were tortured relentlessly. Thinking that the humans sought to invade Kramm and destroy the Crogs, they interrogated the humans on various levels, demanding to know their reasons for invading Kramm, their level of technology, and how long they had been planning to invade. All but two explorers died from the excruciating torture sessions. William was left severely injured and was allowed to return home with the pilot of the Manifest Destiny, to serve as an example of what happens when inferior creatures challenge the might of the Crog Imperium.
When William returned to Earth he was not given a hero's welcome. Gangrene had infected his right leg, and it had to be amputated, replaced by a mechanical prosthesis. The military ran a thorough investigation of his mission, examining and cross-examining him, trying to discover if he might have given up military secrets to such hostile creatures that would soon prove to be Earth's most relentless foe. After a year of investigation, the military was satisfied with its findings, but the stigma of being tried for treason would follow William to the end of his days.
By the time Jordan was born, William's mind was already shattered by his ordeal on Kramm. On his good days, he was pleasant to be around and often regaled Jordan with stories of his adventures in outer space, before he became crippled. On his bad days, he relived the torture sessions on Kramm, lashing out against anyone who came near him, screaming at unseen enemies. His mind continued to deteriorate until most days he forgot who his own family members were. He died at the age of fifty-seven, when Jordan was only ten years old. His death was sudden and savage. Strapped to his bed, screaming and foaming at the mouth, he died in the thoes of insanity, reliving the torture session that had left him a cripple. Jordan would never forget the suffering in his grandfather's eyes as he mercifully passed away, and from that day on he swore vengeance against the monsters that had robbed William of his mind and health.
Two years later, Jordan's father was killed in car accident at the age of thirty-four, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. They had been put in debt, as William's medical bills and constant need of care drained them financially, so Susan Wilde was forced to sell the farm and move to the city to become a secretary, so that Jordan could have a good education.
Jordan did not adjust to city living very well. He missed his old home in the country, and the city was a foreign landscape to him. Many of the children whose families were also in the military taunted Jordan for being related to a “traitor” despite the evidence that proved otherwise. Jordan got into plenty of fights defending his grandfather's name. He was labeled a trouble-maker and because of his violent outbursts the other children avoided him. His grades suffered, and he became increasingly lonely and distant. His mother was disappointed in his acting out and often cried about it. Jordan felt ashamed of making his mother cry on his behalf, and resolved to do better in school.
When Jordan turned fourteen, he applied to a military academy so that he could become a soldier, just like his grandfather. He swore to avenge William's death by defeating the Crogs, by any means necessary. Susan tried her best to dissuade Jordan from taking the same path that his grandfather took, but he would not be swayed. She couldn't bear the thought of losing her only son, not after losing her father-in-law and her dear husband. But she relented, knowing that Jordan was determined to follow his dreams, even without her consent, and it was that stubborn frame of mind which reminded her of the two men she lost. Susan allowed Jordan to join the academy with her blessing, hoping that perhaps it would help to shape him into a better person. She knew it was time to let him grow-up and become a man, but that didn't mean she would worry about him any less.
The academy was by no means easy. Just like in previous schools, Jordan was ridiculed for being related to a "traitor," but he refused to resort to violent means to protect his grandfather's good name. Instead, he subjected himself to the grueling hazing process, going above and beyond what required, and in this way he eventually ingratiated himself to the other recruits and was finally accepted into their ranks. He was well-liked by his fellow cadets and often took most of the heat from the drill sergeant for them.
Jordan applied for the Aerospace Division of the academy, but quickly washed out of training as he would become violently ill and lose all sense of equilibrium whenever he tried to perform the necessary aerial maneuvers in the flight sims. His condition stemmed from an inner ear infection that he contracted in his childhood, which nearly caused him to go completely deaf and forever damaged his inner ear. Despite that humiliating setback, Jordan applied himself to marksmanship and proved to be an excellent gunner, his skills far surpassing those of other cadets his age. Though he felt ashamed that he couldn't honor his grandfather's memory by becoming an aerospace pilot, he vowed that he would use his superb gunnery skills to take out as many of the Crogs as he could.
It would be those very skills which would attract the attention of the Earth Coalition President, and would send Jordan into the unknown reaches of space to participate in an intergalactic race as Rick Thunderbolt's gunner. He jumped at the chance to finally leave Earth on a top-secret mission which was sure to bring him into contact with the Crogs. Little did he know that he would soon meet with a girl named Eva Wei (who introduced herself only as "Molly") and that his life would be forever changed ...
Personality
On the surface, Jordan may appear to be your typical brash and headstrong boy. He may come off as immature, tactless, and even a bit on the dumb side, but beneath his gruff exterior beats a heart of pure gold. Jordan is a friendly and kind-hearted person, until you get on his bad side. Those who argue against his viewpoints will be in for a long battle, for once he makes up his mind about something, nothing will change it. That's not to say that Jordan is always bull-headed; he will willingly and faithfully follow a leader who has earned his trust, namely his partner, Eva Wei. Those who earn his trust will find a fiercely loyal companion who would do anything to protect his comrades, even if it means sacrificing his own life for their well-being.
Jordan loves his creature comforts and dislikes drastic change. A soft bed, a warm meal, good coffee, and being surrounded by friends and family are all he needs to make him happy and comfortable. He tends to overindulge in his favorite treats as he possesses an insatiable sweet tooth and never turns down an offering of baked goods. Jordan's one ambition in life (before he became Avatar) was to settle down with a loving wife and to raise a family of his own.
Though very down to earth and practical in his thinking, Jordan is actually quite sensitive to others' moods and can become very emotional. He tends to wear his heart on his sleeve and doesn't try to hide his feelings. He prefers to avoid confrontation and ill-will between those he considers friends. Usually gentle and even-tempered, when provoked Jordan is prone to violent outbursts. If the one who provoked him is someone he dislikes, he will hold a grudge against them for a very long time. If it is a friend, he will fall into a gloomy and disconsolate state, and will do whatever it takes to make amends. However, Jordan possesses a magnanimous nature and is willing to forgive those who have wronged him, especially if the offending party is ready to meet him halfway. Jordan is also prone to bouts of humor and can be quite comical, always ready to make his friends smile and brighten their spirits when they are in a bad mood. He often offers to listen to others' problems and to support his friends when they are suffering from an emotional crisis. Oddly enough, Jordan is an unusually amorous character and fancies himself as a hopeless romantic. He is actually at his most eloquent when in a romantic frame of mind, and is now currently engaged to the girl of his dreams, his partner: Eva Wei. He is a tenacious lover and would do anything for the girl he's given himself to, body and soul.
Jordan's biggest flaw is that he often suffers from moments of self-doubt, especially after succumbing to failure. He also tends to worry excessively about his loved ones, a trait picked up from his mother, no doubt. He is also rather self-conscious. Despite these short-comings, he takes his job as Avatar very seriously and hopes that he is performing his duties satisfactorily.
Abilities
As the Avatar, Jordan is granted nearly limitless power over the galaxy. His soul is tied to the Mother Planet, and is therefore connected to all of Ōban's offspring. Using a pool of water in the Floating Temple, Jordan can scry on other worlds and observe the inhabitants. He has spent most of his time watching over Eva during their two years of separation, but was too afraid to face her until she finally begged him to come visit her on Earth.
Becoming the Avatar means his entire body was reconstituted when he fell into the Sphere of Power and was granted the powers of the Avatar. This means that every cell of his being was suffused with Ōban's power. Reborn as a God, Jordan is immune to all mundane diseases (though not many of the viruses found on the community), and that he will age at a much slower rate. He heals exceptionally fast and cannot be killed, unless Ōban were somehow to be killed, too. Each sustains the other's life force, so while Ōban remains, Jordan cannot truly die. He will live for ten thousand years, until it is time to choose a new Avatar.
Among some of his other powers includes: the ability to make minor cosmetic changes to himself and others, teleport to any part of the galaxy in the blink of an eye (which makes him an excellent world-hopper, too), communicate telepathically with any creature, and send a "projection" (ie, a spiritual manifestation) of himself to interact with beings while still physically remaining on Ōban. Jordan can read minds, but he never uses this power without permission. He feels it's the highest form of "invasion of privacy." He can also enter into people's dreams. He has used this power in an attempt to subtly influence major decisions made in the galaxy, hoping to maintain balance without direct interference.
Under Q's tutelage, Jordan has learned how to change his physical form more drastically, namely, transforming into animals and other non-humanoid creatures. He's only just begun to learn about lucid dreaming and still has a long way to go. His weakness is his mental prowess, as he's a more "hands on" sort of person. His mentor has taught him a little bit about blocking his mind from unwanted mental contact, but he hasn't had much practice and is still vulnerable to mental invasion.
He's also learned Earthbending and metalbending from Toph, waterbending from Katara, and airbending and firebending from Aang, though he hasn't mastered these disciplines completely. He continues to train so that he can hone his fighting skills and one day use them against Canaletto.
Jordan also possesses limited powers of omniscience and precognition, though he has yet to develop these powers fully. Since his soul is tied to Ōban, his emotional state is reflected in the landscape. When he cries, the sky cries with him. When he is happy, the sun shines and flowers bloom. Jordan also has a limited control over the essence of creation, able to coax plants to grow and to make a barren wasteland a fertile paradise. However, he is forbidden to bring the souls of the dead back to life, as this would upset the delicate balance of powers within the galaxy.
All in all, Jordan is an eager student and loves to learn from anyone, whether they be god or otherwise. He does particularly like learning from gods and makes it a point to observe how they use their powers. He wants desperately to perform his duties as Avatar well, and graciously accepts advice from those who also rule over mortals.
Items of Interest
Dog Tags - Jordan carried with him a pair of dog tags, one that was issued to him when he joined the military, and one that belonged to his grandfather. He carried his grandfather's tag as a memento, believing that it would bring him good luck and protect him from danger. Whenever he felt that he was about to enter into a perilous situation, Jordan would kiss William's tag and pray for his spirit to watch over him.
Jordan has now given his chain of dog tags to Eva, hoping that perhaps the bit of divine protection within them will keep her safe. He also considers the act to be a token of his undying love, though Eva feels that she is not worthy to own them. In any case, Jordan hopes that this gift will serve as a memento of their partnership, and to remind Eva of Jordan's promise to watch over her and to always protect her.
The Avatar's Mark - Not really an item per se. A "tattoo" of Jordan's unique Avatar symbol imprinted on his back in gold "ink". It's actually more like a birthmark than a tattoo. Once Jordan was able to assume human form after becoming the Avatar, this mark appeared on his back. It's where the glowing spirals that float behind his back as part of his "Divine Aura" go when he assumes human form. Oddly enough, the mark is very sensitive to touch and Jordan enjoys it when Eva runs her fingers over it.
