It's seen to them as a filthy, abandoned town soaked in blood and choked by fog - and infested with monsters. No one leaves unchanged.

After all, normal people don't drink from random bottles they find on the ground, get letters from their dead wives, hork fetuses, get locked inside their rooms, or stick their hands in filthy toilets.
