"It was a dumb thing to do but it wasn't that dumb. There hadn't been any trouble out at the lake in years. And it was so exquisitely far from the rest of my life."
-The opening of Sunshine, by Robin McKinley
Sunshine is the story of Sunshine, a well-read baker with attitude living in New Arcadia post Voodoo Wars. Who gets kidnapped by vampires. In order to be fed to the vampire the vampire gang has chained up. But the chained vampire, Constantine, doesn't drink her, because that would be letting the gang, led by his enemy Bo, win. So she survives long enough to rediscover her magical powers and get them both out. In broad daylight. That's quite a story in itself, but it doesn't end there, much as Sunshine might have wished it to. You see, the cut she was given just won't heal. And Bo doesn't like prisoners escaping. Which would be why a vampire turned up 2 blocks away from the coffeehouse where Sunshine works. Which she ended up staking with a stainless steel table knife. Which is impossible.
So now Sunshine has to deal with the interest of the Special Other Forces and ally herself with Constantine if either of them want to survive Bo. And there are more problems to boot. Just great.
Sunshine is "a luminous, entrancing novel with an enthralling pair of characters at its heart", as stated by Booklist, and was hailed by Neil Gaiman himself as "Pretty much perfect." So why are looking at a wiki page about it instead of reading it?
